Urinary Constituents of the Newborn infant


Abstract
Relatively few studies of urinary constutuents of the newborn infant have been recorded, and in some of these the observations vary considerably. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of the urinalyses of 35 unselected newborn infants and thus attempt to define the limits of normal in this age group.
The result as follows
1. Proteinuria was found in 63% of the infants.
2. No glucosuria was seen.
3. pH was below 7.4 in 97% of the infants.
4. Microcopic examination of the centrifuges sediment demonstrated squampus epithelia cells in 83%, tubularepithelial cell in 63%, hyaline csts in 9%, granular cases in 12%, polymorphonuclear leukocytes in 29%, red blood cells in 9% urate crystals in 23%, phosphate crystals in 38%, and cholesterol crystals in 23%.
5. In most cases, the cellular elements of the centrifuged sediment appeared before 5 days age.
